Invershin Viaduct

A spectacular Victorian lattice girder railway bridge in Sutherland, Scotland

Spanning the Kyle of Sutherland, Invershin Viaduct carries The Sutherland Railway across from Culrain to Invershin at the narrowest point. Though only thirty-six chains apart by rail, the two stations at Culrain and Invershin are eight miles apart by road. This used to lead to people walking across the viaduct to get from the Youth Hostel on the Culrain side, at Carbisdale Castle, to the Invershin Hotel on the other. However in 2000, a footbridge was added to the viaduct, carried across on cantilevers added to the bottom flanges of the main lattice girders. This crossing both provides a handy route from one side to the other, and also gives a spectacular close-up view of the structure of the viaduct.
