Grimly Sheepish
Black Sheep and Friday Flock
How to get there, and Flyer Gallery
Venue: Both Black Sheep and Friday Flock are held in Leeds' infamous
Bar Phono, the current name for what used to be La Phonographique,
widely regarded as the spawning-pit of the entire second wave of Goth back
in the 80s, where the tiny dancefloor with its central column saw the
invention of the original Gothic Two Step, Marc Almond of Soft Cell
presided over the decks, and the future members of The Sisters Of Mercy,
The Mission, and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry regularly drank there.
Club: Black Sheep is probably one of,
if not the, oldest Goth nights in the country, being a continuation of "The
Sunday Club" which really does date back to the Dawn of Goth.
To find the club is easy if you know Leeds, the basic directions are:
- On Foot from the Railway Station:
Come out of the main entrance facing the ticket barriers, turn right and
walk along New Station Street, this curves round to the left past a huge
NCP car park, you're now facing North with the railway tracks behind you,
and ahead there's an escalator to the "Leeds Shopping Plaza".
Go straight on, up Albion Street, you'll pass through a pedestrian area,
there's a Waterstones book shop on the left, then cross a wide main road,
"The Headrow", keep going straight on, you'll pass the "St Johns Centre" with
a McDonalds on the right, take the next right, and you'll see the "Merrion
Centre" across the road (see pics below).
Cross at the lights, up the steps/ramp into the
centre, and look for the door shown in the fourth picture below. Welcome
to the realm of the Sheep!
- By car, from anywhere:
Get onto the Leeds "City Centre Loop", often signed "Loop Road". This goes
all the way round the city, one way, clockwise. The Merrion Centre is at
the very top of the loop, both it's northernmost point and the highest.
Go past the front of The Merrion Centre, there's a sign indicating
"J7 MERRION". Move to the left lane, take the
next left, pass The Merrion Hotel, take the next left after the Merrion
Hotel and its service entrance (you want the road *after* the service one),
you're now going along the back of the centre, half way along there is a
multi-storey car-park entrance on the left, if you park in this car park
you can walk straight into the centre and thus the club without having to
go outside at all, which is ideal for dressier outfits, or if it's raining.
The Merrion Centre main entrance, seen across Merrion Way.
Note the road sign (right), this is J7 of the City Centre Loop.
Drivers should take the next left and go round the back of
the Centre to the multi-storey car park.
Looking up the ramp from the entrance.
Methinks they'd not be allowed to build it like that
nowadays, especially with three steps at the bottom!
Club entrance is to the right at the top.
The view back down from the top of the ramp.
Welcome to the Phono!
